Heritage Flight Training Conference will be held here March 4 to 7.
The Heritage Flight Training Conference is held each year prior to the
beginning of the spring and summer air show seasons to provide civilian
and Air Combat Command demonstration pilots a forum to train together.
Heritage formations, during which modern and historic fighters fly
together, are a popular highlight event at air shows throughout the
United States and Canada.
The heritage aircraft will include multiple P-51 Mustangs, the P-40
Warhawk and an A-1 Skyraider. ACC's demonstration teams will include the
A-10 Thunderbolt, the F-15E Strike Eagle, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the

The conference consists of extensive ground training and ends with three
days of flight training. It is not open to the general public.
"The air show season is a great opportunity for the public to see what
kind of Air Force they have and heritage flights demonstrate the history
of American airpower," said Maj. Jesse Jahn, event organizer. "The
mission of the training conference is to prepare all of the pilots
involved to operate safely and efficiently during the air show season."

July 29, 2010 - Update: Media Release - Air Force recommends F-35s for Luke, Tucson still a contender
Information: TUCSON, Ariz. - U.S. Air Force officials announced today the service's recommendations for where to base the first F-35 Lightning II aircraft.
Though Tucson was not among the three semi-finalist locations, it remains a viable candidate.
For F-35 training, the Air Force named Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., as the preferred alternative. As F-35 operational bases, both Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and Burlington Air Guard Station, Vt., got nods.
Last October, officials announced the Arizona Air National Guard unit at Tucson International Airport was one of the top five locations under consideration for F-35 Joint Strike Fighter training. Six other bases were on a short list for F-35 operations.
The recent announcement indicates the Air Force is narrowing the field, yet a final record of decision is expected for spring of 2011.
"We were certainly hoping to be one of the first bases to get the F-35, but the Air Force's recommendation to base them at Luke for training is very encouraging," said Brig. Gen. Greg Stroud, 162nd Fighter Wing commander. "Luke and Tucson enjoy all of the same ingredients that make for perfect pilot training conditions; weather, airspace, ranges and fantastic community support. Our chances for F-35s in the future are as strong as ever."
In March, the Air Force conducted a series of public scoping meetings in Southern Arizona as part of an F-35 Environmental Impact Statement. According to Stroud, the environmental study will continue as planned and a draft statement will be available for public comment later this year.
"We encourage the community to continue their participation in the F-35 basing process. The study being conducted now will apply when the Air Force takes another look at Tucson as future home for new fighter," he said.
The three installations recommended today move a step closer to housing the first 250 to 300 F-35s scheduled for delivery through 2019. With a total of 1,763 F-35s scheduled for purchase through 2035, Tucson will have numerous opportunities to host the new jet.
"We train international pilots, and Luke trains active duty U.S. pilots in the F-16. Their need to ramp up F-35 training will come much sooner than our need. By all indications from the Air Force's survey of our capability to maintain and operate F-35s, we're a strong possibility in the next round. I'm confident that the F-35 will one day be part of the wing's mission," Stroud said.
The F-35 is the next generation strike fighter bringing cutting-edge technologies to the battle space of the future. In the Air Force, the F-35 will primarily service an air-to-ground role; replace aging F-16 and A-10 aircraft while complementing the F-22. The Navy and Marine Corps plan on using the F-35, along with international partners.
The Arizona Air National Guard has flown fighters from its base in Tucson since 1956 when the unit flew the Korean War era F-86A. Through six decades and seven different fighter aircraft the unit has served in air sovereignty and fighter training missions.
The last time a new aircraft came to the wing was in 1985 when the unit accepted its first F-16 Fighting Falcon.

On Monday, September 12, Tucson Electric Power is scheduled to begin performing underground modifications for the construction of the Houghton Road: Irvington Road to Valencia Road project. The utility poles are already relocated, and now TEP needs to make modifications at the Irvington Intersection, across part of the Seven Generations Way driveway and along the roadside just north of Drexel Road. Minimal traffic impacts are expected.
The Houghton Road: Irvington Road to Valencia Road project is anticipated to go out to bid in the next few weeks. Preparations will be made to begin scheduling the next Ward 4 CDRC meeting, followed by an open house, as soon as the bids go out. Please stay tuned for future information.
September 20, 2011 - Update: Purple Heart Park new Dog Park
Information: From Jim, Tucson Parks and Recreation Department - I received word that the funding situation was corrected and approved so we are moving forward into the permitting process. We are estimating a start date of December 1, 2011 and 90 construction days. At the pre-bid conference, we will ask the bidding contractors if they can handle a shorter time frame before providing a quote. I will keep you posted, however with the funding snag corrected, I think an early March opening is a reasonable expectation.
September 20, 2011 - Update: Recycle Rewards Program
Information: Beginning the week of September 19th, Environmental Services (ES) will
kick-off a new Recycle Rewards Program that will provide winning
residents with a Do More Blue Card. The Do More Blue Card will offer
discounts at local restaurants and eateries.
From September through December 2011, ES supervisors will be checking
blue barrels in areas all across Tucson to see how well residents are
recycling. Winners will be given the Do More Blue Card, along with
ES’s thanks for recycling correctly. “Environmental Services wants to
thank those who make an effort to recycle correctly,” said Andrew Quigley,
Environmental Services Director. “We want to encourage customers to
look at the recycling list and see if they are recycling all they can, but
also to see they are recycling the right things.”
Residents who do not receive a Do More Blue Card will be given a flyer
letting them know that their recycling bin was checked and did not
meet the standards. Some common items that shouldn’t go into a blue
recycling barrel include:
Plastic film. For example, plastic bags, dry cleaning bags,
and film packaging should be taken to your grocery store for recycling -not put in your blue barrel.
Food or used food containers.
Green waste such as palm fronds, trimmings, grass cutting,
leaves, dirt and cactus.
Want to improve your recycling knowledge and, perhaps, your
opportunity of winning a Do More Blue Card? Go to www.tucsonrecycles.org to find a
list of recyclables and fill your blue barrel to the brim.
